Turn Behind The Ball For More Power
Submitted by: Bill Moretti - Top 100 Teacher
Category: The Swing
Turning behind the ball is a fairly common term used by the professionals.
To get behind the ball correctly like the top players, simply lay a club down in the middle of your shadow and turn your torso back till your left shoulder is behind the shaft. Doing this exercise, you can see your spine is your asix to turn around. Making this move accomplishes 4 things:
1. A weight transfer occurs naturally
2. Upper body gets behind the ball
3. The posture of the body stays the same height as address.
4. You have a center point to turn around while moving behind the ball.
Why golfers don’t turn behind the ball:
1. They try to keep their head still.
2. The club is swung back in a vertical path.
3. The club is closed on the takeaway where the right elbow can’t fold.
4. The lower body starts before the upper body on the takeaway.
5. Ball is played too far forward.
To feel and practice turning behind the ball, you can practice with a club on your chest and turn – watch the left shoulder turn behind the ball.
Also take practice backswings with the club one foot off the ground. Doing this drill allows the club to open, the right elbow to fold and shoulders to stay level.
1. Getting behind the ball is easier on the spine
2. Makes the swing effortless
3. Puts the body in the best position for the downsing
Get behind the ball and your swing will last longer and your shots will go longer.

Bill is President and Owner of the Academy of Golf Dynamics, which offers classes in Colorado Springs and Austin, Texas. He personally oversees each school, which is something you don't find at other golf schools.
A low 3:1 student-teacher ratio at his Academy of Golf Dynamics schools means that there is plenty of personal instruction. The staff analyzes how each student learns best, and combines that information with each individual's goals and skill level to construct a personal improvement program.
The PGA instructors at the Academy of Golf Dynamics combine their skills with high-speed video to develop a thorough evaluation of your swing and an improvement program designed specifically for you.
Golf Magazine has rated the Academy of Golf Dynamics as one of the top 25 golf schools in the country, and Money Magazine says that it is one of the very best in value.
Their practice facility was designed by Jack Nicklaus and includes three full-length practice holes.
